Mnemonic for Leptin and Ghrelin

Use this trick and mnemonic to remember the function of Leptin and ghrelin, two hormones which control hunger and satiety.

Leptin makes you wanna be thin.
It decreases food intake by inhibiting hunger and stimulating satiety center.

Ghrelin makes you wanna gobble food.
It is an appetite inducer.

    • Target: Hypothalamus
    • Effect: Binds to and inhibits receptors
      • Causes “fullness”

Ghrelin is a hormone produced by the stomach, or gastric, cells in response to an empty stomach. Ghrelin targets the hypothalamus to increase the appetite and cause a feeling of hunger.

Key Points

  • Ghrelin
